Also known by the scientific name Eptesicus serotinus, serotine bats mate by touching their genitals together. The behavior is similar to a “cloacal kiss,” a way of mating used by many birds. The information on bat mating behavior could help with efforts to come up with a way to artificially inseminate endangered bat species. “It’s a bit of an open question how their semen really gets into the female reproductive tract. “There are more than 1,000 species of bats, and many of them are also endangered, she said.

CNN —Three former New Mexico State University basketball players have been charged with felony sex crimes and other offenses over allegations they were hazing teammates and student staff members – accusations that helped prematurely end the team’s 2022-23 season – the state attorney general said Thursday. The offenses are alleged to have happened from August to November 2022, grand jury indictments released by Torrez’s office say. Washington, a junior guard last season, and Bradley, then a sophomore forward, each face five counts of false imprisonment and criminal sexual contact. CNN has sought comment from the attorney general’s office and New Mexico State University. The Aggies resumed their men’s basketball program under a new coach, and the team played its first two games of the 2023-24 regular season this week.

Summer Science Program, a nonprofit with an annual budget of about $2 million, sent about 200 high school juniors to six-week intensive research courses at universities this year. Summer Science Program learned last year that one of its alumni, Franklin Antonio, a co-founder of chipmaker Qualcomm, had granted the organization 20% of his estate, said CEO Frank Steslow. The program intends to double the number of students enrolled next summer to more than 400 and increased its annual budget to over $7 million. Summer Science Program has already received a first payment of $65 million, and the funds are unrestricted. But he added, “it seems unusual at first until you realize that the organization itself is almost like a gift restriction, because they’re very specific in what they do,” referring to Summer Science Program.

The largest desalination plant in the US is in San Diego. AdvertisementAdvertisementIn the early 1990s, San Diego was dying on the vine, starved of water in a series of yearslong droughts. At the last minute, a miracle saved San Diego — rain and snow in the desert replenished aquifers, saving the city from intense cutbacks. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe desalination plant produces potable water for San Diego county. With these easier options on the table, it's even more staggering that cities such as San Diego have pushed desalination efforts through.

Huy Fong Foods' sriracha hot sauce, in the green-capped bottle with the rooster label, has been hard to find for the past few years. Strained supplier relations coupled with adverse agricultural conditions have left Huy Fong Foods' sriracha out of stock at many grocers nationwide. Underwood Ranches, a farm owned by Craig Underwood based in Ventura County, California, supplied Huy Fong Foods' peppers for 28 years. Huy Fong Foods claimed it overpaid Underwood Ranches for its crops from the 2016 season. Huy Fong Foods declined CNBC's request for an interview.

Donahoe can't get seven hours of sleep every night, but he said that he tries to hit 70 hours of sleep every 10 days. Hitting this target, rather than exactly how much sleep he gets per night, is a sleep science workaround that the Nike CEO says has been working for him. Sleep science research has consistently shown that the average adult should aim for seven hours of a sleep each night. It's not necessarily always going to be the recommended seven hours of sleep that will ensure a good night's rest, according to sleep experts. In the long term, if you don't get enough sleep, there's health outcomes that can occur."

But while muscle memory is real, that’s not what is actually going on in your body. Understanding how both kinds of muscle memory work can help you get off to a strong start if you’re establishing a new fitness routine or rebooting one after a break. Physiological muscle memoryThe physiological side of muscle memory has to do with the ability to quickly regain lost muscle. This form of muscle memory occurs because when you first build muscle, your body adds new cells to those muscles. Science says another type of muscle memory is related to the regrowth of actual muscle tissue.

Four flight attendants told Insider they recommend passengers keep their shoes on while flying. "It's probably bodily fluids that you're walking in," one flight attendant warns. "It's not water that you're seeing on the bathroom floor sometimes," Leysha Perez, a regional flight attendant, told Insider. One Delta flight attendant went a step further to advise passengers against wearing open-toed shoes like slippers while flying. CNN —Two former New Mexico State University (NMSU) men’s basketball players filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against former head coach Greg Heiar, three former NMSU players, assistant head coach Dominique Taylor and the NMSU Board of Regents, citing alleged hazing and sexual assault incidents within the team. Benjamin and Odunewu say they reported the alleged incidents to the NMSU coaching staff but that no action was taken, according to the lawsuit. “This action is clearly needed, especially after receiving additional facts and reviewing investigation reports related to the hazing allegations involving student-athletes on the team,” New Mexico State University Chancellor Dan E. Arvizu said in a statement to CNN in February. At the time, New Mexico State University said it was hiring “another law firm to conduct another internal investigation” according to the lawsuit. According to the lawsuit, Benjamin and Odunewu will not be a part of the team next season.

Some members of Congress have joined the movement to provide free textbooks to university students. The college textbook landscape, however, isn't a free market, as students must buy whichever course materials their professor selects for their class. As states across the country create their own grants for open textbooks, members of Congress have also begun to take notice. "We are helping cut the cost of attending college by supporting the creation and expansion of open college textbooks," Durbin told Insider in a statement. And while there's no timeline for the Affordable College Textbook Act to make it through Congress, federal legislators have granted $47 million in funds for open textbooks since 2018 as part of the Open Textbook Pilot Program.
